This is a fast changing situation and employers and  employees should keep themselves informed by following government daily briefings and by visiting:  https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guidance-to-employers-and-businesses-about-covid-19

Time off for Dependents

Schools in Wales and Scotland have already announced that they will close at the end of this week.It is likely the other nations will follow suit. For parents this can be a challenging time.

Parents or those with parental or caring responsibilities have the right to have a reasonable amount of time off to put alternative arrangements in place if their child's school closes unexpectedly, their nursery closes or a childminder or carer calls off at short notice. This is usually unpaid, unless an employer has a different arrangement in place. The right to the time off is to allow the employee to make arrangements for the care of the child or dependent ; it is not to stay off for the duration of the crisis or illness.

Here is a handy government website https://www.gov.uk/time-off-for-dependants
